“Today is the first day of the rest of your life” was a favourite proverb of my grandfather’s. My dad has often used it too, and it’s something that has stuck with me through the years.
For such a short phrase, it packs a lot of meaning.
“Today” brings us to the present, rather than dwelling on the past or ruminating about the future.
“Today” is full of potential, and the action we take now can set in motion a better future we can’t even anticipate.
“First day” conjures up images of a new school year, or the first day of a new job. On the first day, nothing else matters, and the feeling of a “new leaf” can inspire us to greater heights.
Somewhat more daunting, “the rest of your life” reminds that we are on a journey and that what we do today sets the course of that journey. Life is a not a dress rehearsal and we need to make the most of the time that we have.
